The Opportunity

The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation global radio-astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. It is one observatory with two telescopes – SKA-Low in Western Australia and SKA-Mid in South Africa. Under the collaboration agreement with SKAO, CSIRO is offering an outstanding opportunity for an experienced IT Manager to join the SKA-Low management team as a core member.

  • Support the establishment of the SKA office in Australia

Your duties will include:

The SKAO is seeking an IT Manager to be responsible for the provision of IT services to SKAO staff in Australia and beyond. The role will involve close collaboration with teams across the globe working on the SKA project. The position is ideal for someone with a technical background looking to build a team but who is also able to directly handle computing and networking challenges.

  • Deliver IT services to the SKAO Team here in Australia; Geraldton, Perth and the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory.
  • Provide IT support to local SKAO staff;  perform incident request & problem management, device procurement and builds, support of communications, and local network and presentation technologies.
  • Recruitment of, and management of a team of IT and networking technical staff. Managing their work allocation, rewards, performance and career management, leave approval, and the identification of training and development needs.
  • Assist with the setting of requirements for IT systems and establishing those systems in new SKA premises.
  • Contributing to and championing the follow-the-sun service desk; drawing on the technical expertise of local IT staff, also IT Staff in the other host countries and the wider technical community.

To be considered you will need:

Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
1.    Degree in an IT related field or equivalent hands-on experience e.g., eligibility for membership of the Australian Computer Society.
2.    Technical experience and ability to provide direct IT support when required, including experience in the administration of local area wired and wireless networks, printers and associated office infrastructure.
3.    Extensive experience managing ICT systems, assets and budgets, including service reporting and asset lifecycle management and software asset management.
4.    Experience in a leadership position, or evidence that the applicant has the potential to fulfil a leadership position, within a similar ICT service delivery customer-focused environment and a proven track record as a leader and manager who has demonstrated initiative and self-motivation, as well as the ability to motivate and inspire others.
5.    Demonstrated experience building successful relationships in a complex delivery/client environment, including multiple stakeholders, suppliers, and peer delivery groups.
6.    A strong service delivery focus, including excellent oral and written communication skills.  This includes an ability to deliver clear presentations and reports.

Desirable
1.    Knowledge and background with IT Service Management disciplines and Frameworks such as ITIL and Change Management.
2.    Certification in industry/community -recognised disciplines/technologies pertinent to the role.
3.    Experience with Microsoft, Apple and Google computing devices and mobile device technologies and device management systems.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, or an Australian Permanent Resident holder.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.
