NSW Trustee and Guardian is seeking an experienced, innovative, and strategic senior executive leader who is passionate about leading Financial Performance and Investments in a values-based Government organisation.

About NSW Trustee and Guardian

NSW Trustee and Guardian protects, promotes and supports the rights, dignity, choices and wishes of the people of NSW. The agency supports the Chief Executive Officer and the Public Guardian to provide customer-centred services to the people of NSW, including some of the state’s most vulnerable. We do this by providing a range of multidisciplinary services including will-making, trustee, financial management and guardianship services.

We write approximately 12,000 estate planning documents each year, support over 49,000 customers annually and manage over eight billion dollars in customer assets. A NSW Government agency within the Stronger Communities Portfolio, our services help support and protect people at critical moments in their lives.

About the opportunity

As the Executive Director Financial Performance and Investments, you lead and oversee the division to deliver investment compliance and operational effectiveness, efficient procurement strategies, supplier management and customer and agency financial services.

You will have significant fiduciary obligations and will be responsible for the efficient management of millions of financial and asset-based transactions each year, as well as the oversight of agency and customer funds and assets in excess of $8.1b. You will manage the performance of both internally and externally managed investments to deliver sound returns for customers and the agency.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have proven ability to:

  • Lead and direct the Financial Performance and Investments function including strategic forward planning and decision making, budget management and people leadership and implementation of best practice oversight and operational frameworks, controls, systems, policies and procedures.
  • Drive the financial management of NSW Trustee and Guardian and oversee key agency requirements of financial planning, budgeting, insurance, and detailed performance reporting.
  • Lead the investment of pooled customer funds (approximately $3.6b) through two common funds.
  • Manage outsourced functions including custody, fund management, fund accounting, unit pricing and maintaining registers of customer investments.
  • Direct the financial management of transactions relating to customers’ trust accounts and oversee the viability and risk of finance and funding strategies, products, services, markets and investments, and implement financial, commercial and risk management arrangements.

You will be based at our offices in Sydney and Parramatta. 
You will need to be able to travel to both sites as required.

Essential Requirements for the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in finance or accounting and/or extensive equivalent experience.
  • Chartered Accountant or CPA membership.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Extensive financial planning and investment experience including the management, operation and accounting for large investment portfolios including cash, cash deposits, hedging, managed investment funds and passive investment management strategies.
  • Extensive understanding of the public sector and government financial arrangements and procurement framework.
  • Proven leadership experience and people management at a senior level.
