Samantha Mostyn AO has been named Australia's 28th governor-general.

With a distinguished career in the business world and vocal advocacy for gender equality, Ms Mostyn currently chairs the federal government's Women's Economic Equality Taskforce and has previously held a variety of influential roles, including AFL commissioner.

Scheduled to be sworn in on July 1, Ms Mostyn will succeed David Hurley, who has been in office since 2019.

This appointment comes after King Charles's approval of Prime Minister Albanese's recommendation, which noted Ms Mostyn's modern and optimistic leadership qualities.

“Her leadership reflects our enduring Australian values of equality, fairness and a responsibility to build a better future for the next generation,” Mr Albanese remarked.

Ms Mostyn says her business experience and legal training have prepared her for the governor-generalship.

“I can think of no greater purpose, prime minister, than to serve this country I love as governor-general, particularly at a time in our history when the challenges and opportunities we face are large and complex,” she said.

“My connections to this country and people have come in so many forms - from contributing to governance around executive investment and board tables, to cheering at the footy, to being moved and inspired in the audience at our extraordinary music and arts events or packing food boxes in my local community.”

The new job is expected to continue Ms Mostyn’s record of impactful contributions to organisations such as Reconciliation Australia, Beyond Blue, the Australia Council for the Arts, and the National Mental Health Commission, and her pivotal role in establishing the AFL's women's competition.
