Sky Muster fixed wireless upgrades are coming soon.

NBN Co has announced the addition of 24,000 homes and businesses to its fixed wireless footprint as part of its Sky Muster to fixed wireless upgrade.

The expansion of its fixed wireless network will enable 6,700 premises in NSW, 6,500 in Queensland, 2,200 in South Australia, 1,200 in Tasmania, 5,900 in Victoria and 1,800 in Western Australia to access a fixed wireless-based service instead of satellite.

The upgrade is part of a $750 million investment, $480 million of which is funded by the federal government.

The objective is to provide a total of 120,000 premises with an upgrade path from satellite to fixed wireless by the end of 2024.

According to NBN Co, the selected premises were chosen based on their proximity to existing fixed wireless towers, with priority given to those in the most heavily used parts of its satellite footprint. It is unclear whether any of the 24,000 premises currently have an active NBN connection.

NBN Co will start offering the fixed wireless services from mid-April, allowing residents and businesses to enjoy faster and more reliable internet connectivity.

“The Albanese Government is expanding fixed wireless access across the country to ensure local residents and businesses outside our major cities have faster and more reliable internet,” said Communications Minister Michelle Rowland.

The shift from satellite to wireless is happening in parallel with an expanded fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) upgrade to fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP).

In February, NBN Co announced plans to have an additional 120,000 FTTP premises activated by July this year under its multi-billion dollar “fibre connect” program.
