About the Role

As a member of a team within Access Foundations, the successful applicant(s) will be involved in the design, development, testing and integration of RF systems and sub-systems to support ASD’s mission. This is achieved using one or more of the following skills:

  • Developing, integrating and configuring antennas, and RF sub-systems in hardware or software forms, including software-defined radio (SDR),
  • RF design and testing (using antenna theory, propagation theory, system performance optimisation), and
  • Integration, testing, and evaluation of system and subsystem components, using industry standard test equipment such as spectrum and logic analysers and channel simulators.

For these roles, ASD requires a mix of specialisation and generalisation across the Radio Frequency design and development skill sets. Whether you are a dedicated RF or software engineer with a passion for designing software based RF solutions, or an RF technician with a love of building, testing, fault finding or integrating bespoke and COTS technologies to deliver customers the products they need, these positions offer you an exciting and rewarding career opportunity.

About the Team

These roles will be part of teams that will;

  • Deliver new capability under the REDSPICE program
  • Deliver ASD's major capability programs and
  • Enhance and modernise existing capabilities

Access Foundations Branch within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), will deliver cutting edge capabilities to support ASD’s Signals Intelligence and Offensive Cyber Capabilities. To facilitate this, Access Foundations is seeking to fill specialised positions for Radio Frequency (RF) Engineers and Technicians (at the ASD EL1 level) to design unique RF communications solutions and products enabling the conduct of intelligence, security and military operations.

These positions are part of a team that is involved in end-to-end capability design, development, delivery, and sustainment. We build our unique products using state of the art technologies and techniques across RF hardware, digital signals processing and software defined radio. These positions offer a competitive remuneration package which includes an attractive superannuation component. In addition to remuneration, ASD will provide you with training (both on the job and formal industry training) to help you build new skills and broaden your career.

As ASD continues to grow, in particular under REDSPICE, there may be opportunities to perform these roles in other locations around Australia. Along with this, specific roles may attract additional payments under a skills payment arrangement. ASD is fully supportive of professional and personal development for all candidates.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will work well in a team environment and contribute to the development and growth of the RF engineering capability within ASD. You will be responsible for both supporting our existing products and designing new ones by bringing your ideas and experience to meet our real-world problems. These positions are where you detect capability gaps, predict future capability requirements and derive ways to improve our capabilities and work practices. Whether you are an RF or software engineer who enjoys nothing more than designing a new product and seeing that turning into reality or an RF Technician who enjoys product testing and deployment, or you are somewhere in between, these positions offer unique problems for you to solve in a team environment.

The RF Technician will lead and undertake the integration, testing and documentation of engineering subsystems under direction and guidance. The RF Technician will be required to work across a variety of disciplines including RF hardware design, software configuration, testing, and completing Systems Engineering documentation and procedures. The RF Technician will be required to provide support and oversee team members in the required areas of expertise and share their knowledge to aid in improving staff understanding.
