Embattled carrier Tiger Airways has named former Virgin Blue senior executive Andrew David as its new chief executive of its Australian operations.

Mr David, formerly the chief operating officer at Virgin, will replace outgoing CEO Tony Davis.  The new Tiger boss also had previous airline management roles including chief information officer at Air New Zealand and general manager Pacific Airlines.

The appointment has been lauded as a solid choice by the company, which is continue to struggle since its six-week grounding earlier in the year.

Mr David faces the challenge of rebuilding Tiger's business after the grounding in July, which cost it at least $20 million in revenue.

Mr Chin Yau Seng, set to take over as chief executive officer of parent company Tiger Airways Holdings, welcomed the appointment of Mr David to run the Australian operations.

"He brings a wealth of airline business experience and a proven leadership track record," he said.

Mr David will assume his position as of October 17, two weeks before Mr Davis officially leavers the airline. Mr David will be the fourth CEO to hold the position in 18 months.
