About the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre 
Founded in 2001, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. We are an independent not-for-profit organisation whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well being. We champion the rights of people seeking asylum and mobilise a community of compassion to create lasting social and policy change.

About The Role 
This role will form part of a highly passionate and driven team within the Human Rights Legal Program. It provides a unique opportunity not only to contribute to the provision of high quality legal services to people seeking asylum but to also play a part in training and developing the next generation of human rights lawyers in Australia. 
 
The team is composed of incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers working on one of the most contentious and complex human rights issues in Australia. 

This position is part-time (0.6 FTE) with a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
 
About You
As an experienced and driven Solicitor within the practice of refugee law and with a passion to make a difference in the lives of those seeking asylum, you will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Solicitor with current legal practising certificate 
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in refugee law and practice 
  • Demonstrated competence in advocacy before administrative decision makers and courts 
  • Exceptional time management skills and demonstrated ability to prioritise competing demands and limited resources  
  • Ability to train, develop and supervise students and/or volunteers 
  • Willingness to undertake work offsite in places such as immigration detention centres 
  • Experience in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds 
  • Knowledge of the policy context of practice with asylum seekers visa categories/conditions, and the barriers faced by people seeking asylum in Australia

Lived experience of seeking asylum in Australia is highly desirable. Knowledge of policy and issues impacting on people seeking asylum in Australia as well as previous experience working within a not-for-profit environment, would also be advantageous.
