The Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW supports research across 19 core facilities for studying medical, biological, chemical, and physical materials. Our facilities are housed in custom-built laboratories accessible to UNSW staff, students, and external researchers, including government and industry. MWAC staff provide research collaboration, technical support, education, and training to users accessing the facilities. The Centre also undertakes industry projects and specialist consulting work for external clients in areas of specialisation. The Centre is managed by around 125 staff, overseeing equipment worth about $200M.
The Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the MWAC senior leadership team, responsible for strategic planning and operations including the provision and management of shared services across Finance, HR, IT, Health & Safety and asset management, in alignment with UNSW’s strategic goals. You’ll also manage stakeholder engagement, management and support for translational research and business development goals with industry and government clients including the Chemical Consulting Laboratory.
You’ll collaborate with MWAC leadership and report to the Executive Director MWAC, Renee Whan, and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure), Grainne Moran. The COO has at least 8 direct reports.

About the successful applicant
You have postgraduate qualifications in finance, business, management, or science, and extensive senior leadership experience, preferably in technical, research, or higher education sectors. Critical skills include financial management, people management, stakeholder collaboration, networking, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
You’ll also be able to demonstrate your experience with public and private sectors, particularly in research, funding, business development and or commercialisation, proven track record in managing multiple projects and commitment to UNSW’s values and health and safety policies.
