Introduction
Defence is seeking an exceptional senior executive to fill a position at the SES Band 1 level within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group. The position is an integral part of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) leadership team and is accountable to First Assistant Secretary ASCA. The Australian Government has established the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator within the Department of Defence to drive innovation that delivers new capability at speed for the Australian Defence Force.
As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of Defence. You will:
- Lead and manage a Branch practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration;
- Demonstrate strong judgement and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems;
- Effectively and constructively challenge the status quo as required;
- Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of results through engaging, collaborating and partnering; and
- Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

Your Role
The Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator will transform the way Defence delivers breakthrough solutions that provide the Australian Defence Force with an asymmetric advantage. ASCA will harness Australia’s innovation potential – within an ecosystem that includes Australian industry, research organisations, and government partners – by facilitating the ongoing supply of ideas, technologies and innovation skills, and ensuring they are addressing current and future Defence strategic challenges.
As the Assistant Secretary ASCA Capability Transition, you will be responsible for:
- Assuring a sponsored acquisition path is established with capability managers prior to project commencement within ASCA.
- Manage agile contracting and procurement approaches.
- Managing user requirements for delivery of minimum viable capability.
- Oversight of functions to accelerate the delivery of capability into Australian Defence Force service.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian citizens. This is a security-designated position and the successful applicant will be required to hold or obtain a Positive Vetting security clearance
A Merit Pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill similar vacancies that may occur within the next 18 months.
