The Role
ASD is seeking to fill specialised positions for Firmware Engineers and Embedded Software Engineers or Technologists (at the ASD5 & ASD6 level) to design and develop unique embedded software and firmware solutions, which will enable the conduct of intelligence, security and military operations. These positions are part of a close-knit team responsible for the end-to-end capability development and delivery of embedded systems, from conceptual design right through to end product delivery. We build our unique products using state of the art technologies, techniques and systems in the firmware, electronic and mechanical domains.
The breadth and depth of the team’s work program will give the successful applicant(s) the opportunity to be exposed to the full product life-cycle and see the results of their work turn into real-world outcomes for our customers. To deliver on our broad mission we are a multidisciplinary team of engineers, developers, technicians and tradespersons that cover off on:
- systems engineering and integration;
- firmware / software design and development;
- electronic design and production;
- mechanical design and production.
About our Team
As a member of a capability development team within ASD, the successful applicant(s) will be involved in the design, development/integration, testing and deployment of firmware for embedded systems and sub-systems to support ASD’s mission.
This is achieved using one or more of the following skills:
- Development and integration of ARM-based software packages
- Embedded Linux development, configuration and maintenance
- Programming embedded microcontroller-based systems, for example ARM-based microcontrollers
- Development of unit, integration and system tests
- Development/sustainment of wider ICT infrastructure (CI/CD pipelines, monitoring capabilities, server configuration automation, containerisation, etc)
- VHDL development, test benching and synthesis for FPGAs
Whether you are a dedicated firmware engineer with the love and passion for developing bespoke products from the ground up, or a motivated SysAdmin or Technician with a love of building and integrating COTS SBCs, Linux build systems, or containerising applications to run in Docker on a RaspberryPi. These positions offer you an exciting and rewarding career opportunity
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will work well in a team environment and contribute to the development and growth of the embedded systems engineering capability within ASD. You will be responsible for both supporting our existing products and developing new ones by bringing your ideas and experience to meet our challenging real-world problems.
These positions come with capacity to grow into a role where you can detect capability gaps, predict future capability requirements and drive improvements to our capabilities and work practices. Whether you are a Firmware Engineer / Embedded Software Engineer who enjoys nothing more than developing a new product and seeing it turn into reality, or a Firmware Technician who enjoys automating and integrating systems using Raspberry Pi’s and Python scripts, or somewhere in between, these positions offer unique problems for you to solve in a team environment.
