How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne…
Working closely with the Director People, Culture and leadership (PCL), the position manages a team of HR professionals in delivering best practice HR outcomes, with the aim to eliminate or minimise organisational and people related risks, adhere with local government obligations, help the organisation improve performance and capability and support the achievement of the Council strategic goals and objective. This role is responsible for leading, managing and developing the People, Strategy and Partnerships team strategically and operationally and ensuring smooth IR and ER environment in the organisation. A key element of the role is to provide strategic advice to the Director People, Culture and Leadership as well as manage critical internal and external organisational relationships.
As a strategic senior leader, you will be the driving force in leading strategic HR, transformation and implementation of City of Melbourne’s (CoM’) ER / IR framework, including driving the strategy.
You are an authentic, credible and down to earth leader with an impressive track record of achievement across the HR discipline within a large, complex matrix organisation. Your highly developed people management skills and strong commercial acumen will build confidence and add value to the wider HR function. You will draw on your strong capabilities in decision making, influencing and sophisticated stakeholder engagement skills. Above all you will champion our cultural transformation journey and role model shaping positive and inclusive workplace culture.

You can bring… (Selection criteria)
- Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
- Tertiary qualifications in HR, IR, Law or Business (Post Graduate qualifications highly desirable).
- Proven ability to lead, develop and motivate a team of HR professionals.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with CoM Leaders, understanding their business drivers and individual needs to create significant business value.
- Extensive expertise and experience in providing advice on industrial relations issues, including interpretation of legislation and agreements.
- Significant experience in the negotiation and development of Enterprise Agreements.
- Sound knowledge and experience with the Fair Work Commission and other relevant.
- Legal authorities.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills including discretion and judgement in dealing with a complex administrative and political environment.
- Proven experience in providing advice in a concise and professional manner to Executive and senior management
- Ability to negotiate with staff, management and unions on organisational issues.
