About the Organisation

Servicing approximately 1500 Aboriginal clients of both Martu and Nyiyaparli decent, Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) provides comprehensive primary health care services to individuals and families within the remote Aboriginal communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji as well as the regional centre of Newman.

About the Opportunity

The Health Centre Coordinator directly reports to and is accountable to the Clinical Manager - Remote Services and is responsible for the day-to-day management and coordination of primary health care service delivery at Jigalong Health Centre.

The Jigalong Health Centre Coordinator is required to provide high level culturally competent, clinical leadership and supervision to the Jigalong Health Centre team ensuring planning and supervision of daily duties and coordination of visiting services. This position encompasses both the face-to-face delivery of primary health care services (including participation in the after-hours on call roster) as well as a significant component of administrative duties. Duties include;

  • Provision of Clinical Leadership and Direct Client Care
  • Human Resource Management and Coordination
  • Medicare billing
  • Medication Management
  • Patient Information System Management (Communicare)
  • Education and Health Promotion
  • Vaccine Storage and Management
  • Infection Control
  • Reporting and Data Management

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse;
  • At least 3 years post graduate experience in Nursing, demonstrating a sound professional background;
  • Well-developed primary health care skills including (but not limited to) delivery of age appropriate checks, immunisation program delivery, the rheumatic heart disease program delivery, men’s and women’s health program delivery (where appropriate), child health program delivery, antenatal care and chronic disease management.
  • Strong understanding of the principles of the model of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.
  • An strong understanding and a commitment to the principles of Primary Health Care and Community Development;
  • Current Understanding Vaccines and the National Immunisation Program Certificate or willingness to obtain within the first six weeks of commencement
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate nursing care programs in a remote primary health setting;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitivity with Aboriginal people;
  • Current First Aid or Intermediate/Advanced Life Support certificate.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold the principles of cultural safety including an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the unique issues affecting and impacting on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
  • Experience, skills and knowledge working in a multidisciplinary team, including teamwork and conflict management;
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills along with an ability to adapt to changing needs;
  • An ability to work, reside and travel independently in a remote region.

Ideally, you will also:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be acknowledged as such by your community.
  • Have previous high-level experience in the use of Communicare including having undertaken Communicare Administrator training.
  • Hold a Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Master’s degree in the area of Remote Health, Public Health, Health Administration, Health Promotion or similar.
  • Demonstrate prior experience providing high quality clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team in a remote primary health care environment.

The position involves working with a multicultural organisation where the majority of staff, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require an unrestricted “C” Class Driver’s Licence, and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) and Working with Children Check prior to appointment. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with remote Aboriginal communities and make a drastic impact to the health and well-being outcomes of these communities.

PAMS operates four remote sites, three of which have a team of one nurse and a range of ancillary workers. Although the successful candidate will have a substantive location they must be prepared to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS operates in some of the most remote parts of Australia and staff are required to be proficient at driving a 4WD vehicle and willing to fly in light aircraft.
