The Role
The Australian Naval Classification Authority (ANCA) is seeking an engineer who can support the ANCA Operations functions. The Deputy Director Initial Classification Management will manage a broad range of branch activities including the development of the ANC Framework artefacts and the review and recommendation for approval of Naval Vessel ANC certification.

The role will need to fulfil a number of tasks that may in include, but is not limited to:

  • Lead a team, including allocating resources and setting priorities.
  • Represent, advocate and negotiate on behalf of the organisation to achieve Branch outcomes.
  • Manage the provision of specialist support for the development of Naval Vessel initial classification permissible evidence.
  • Provide specialist support to Naval Vessel Operators and applicants for initial Naval classification.
  • Manage the provision of specialist support for the development of a Naval Vessel ANC Record and associated Compliance Plan.
  • Support and mentor team members; aligning complementary skills and allocating resources in a manner that delivers results.

About our Team
The Australian Naval Classification Authority (ANCA) is responsible for establishing, managing and continuously improving a system of naval classification (the ANC Framework) to assure the seaworthiness of naval vessels operating in the defence of Australia. As a newly-established Branch, the ANCA is undergoing growth and will include a diverse geographic workforce based in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.  This position will be based at Campbell Park in Canberra. The ANC Authority has engaged a long-term Sovereign Industry Partner, Bureau Veritas, to support ANCA work.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will need to be self-motivated, take initiative, be able to work with minimal supervision and lead a high performing team of engineering professionals. You will have the ability to positively engage and negotiate with a range of stakeholders, articulate issues and options for resolution in a technical environment, have a very high attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to variable conditions.

You will need to be a quick learner and have the ability to quickly understand and apply the ANC Framework and the Branch’s purpose. You will also need to work collaboratively with other engineering branches and those associated to Naval Shipbuilding, the wider Defence organisation and the Defence Industry.  You will need to have the ability to form and maintain relationships with our commercial Sovereign Industry Partner.

To perform in this role effectively, you will require the following skills:

  • Ability to manage and lead a team, including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people. 
  • High level of accuracy in completing work within timeframes, sharing own expertise with others and guide and mentor less experienced employees. 
  • Exercise assigned engineering authorities and any Engineering delegations. 
  • Lead, plan and deliver critical and complex to very complex engineering and project activities and provide advice in all relevant engineering disciplines and management systems under broad direction. 
  • Work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and influence the work of teams to ensure successful delivery of project, system or platform outputs. 
  • Evaluate engineering activities to understand critical factors for success and engage in continuous improvement and innovation to ensure that delivered materiel meets requirements. 
  • Lead and ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems.
