You will:

  • Lead and manage a Branch practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration;

Your Role
The Budgeting and Reporting Branch is within the Budgets and Financial Services Division. The Assistant Secretary is responsible for leading a technical Branch that is responsible for:

  • Providing accurate and timely financial input to Defence’s updates of the Integrated Investment Program (IIP), Defence’s Portfolio Budget Statements (PBS), Portfolio Additional Estimates Statements (PAES), Defence Annual Report (DAR) and Defence Senate Estimates process.
  • Managing budget reviews and updating as part of the Commonwealth budget cycle, including major budget reviews for acquisition programs and sustainment, workforce, operating, and no-win-no-loss (NWNL) Operations. 
  • Preparing and co-ordinating the annual Defence Budget Portfolio Submission to Government.
  • Control, oversight and management of the Defence Internal Budget and associated policies and systems.
  • Providing strategic advice and contestability on budget pressures, over-programming risks and opportunities in the planning, development and execution of business plans and budgets.
  • Supporting the Defence Senior Executives and teams, to manage their allocated budgets, including aligning budget with business activities, and providing advice on managing budget pressures.
  • Monthly internal management reporting to the Defence Executive Committees including conduct of the Defence Mid-Year Finance Review process on behalf of the CFO.
  • Managing Defence’s end of financial year expenditure to achieve a balanced budget outcome.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian citizens. This is a security-designated position and the successful applicant will be required to hold or obtain a security clearance at the Negative Vetting 2 level.
A Merit Pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill similar vacancies that may occur within the next 18 months.
