EL 2 (S&T Level 6) Discipline Lead Immersed Corrosion

Executive Level 2 (S&T Level 6)
$125,622 - $150,785 (plus Super)
Fishermans Bend - VIC

The Role
As the Discipline Lead Immersed Corrosion, you will nurture, lead and be responsible for a multidisciplinary team, comprising APS staff and embedded contractors researching corrosion as it applies to immersed conditions on naval vessels. You will engage with key Defence stakeholders in acquisition programs as well as platform operations to seek technology insertion opportunities and seek funding for continuing and new R&D programs.

With a focus on Defence impact, your team will undertake research in a diverse range of immersed corrosion fields including microbiologically influenced corrosion, corrosion of seawater piping systems, cathodic corrosion protection systems, corrosion related electromagnetic signatures and research into coatings and materials used in current and future submarines and surface ships.

These programs are achieved through strong external partnerships with ADF, Australian Industry and academia and international Allied Defence S&T Organisations, and Platform User Groups as well as internal DST partners in order to deliver impactful corrosion mitigation outcomes to the ADF.

About our Team
Platforms Division develops innovative platform technologies and provides S&T advice on the evolution of platforms required to deliver a capability edge to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in the maritime, aerospace, land and space domains. We have expertise in a diverse range of technologies including sensors, statistics, materials, propulsion, automation, systems integration, signatures, and shipbuilding. These are integrated into multidisciplinary research programs to deliver improved operational capability, availability, reliability, survivability and safety of ADF platforms. We are at the forefront of future systems, including autonomous vehicles, and the ADFs future submarine and surface ship programs.

Specialised Coatings and Corrosion Science Group resides in the Non Acoustic Signature Management branch of Maritime Division. The team strives to reduce the cost of ownership and enhance operational capability of ADF platforms through research into environmental degradation and the development of high performance Defence paint schemes.

The Immersed Corrosion Discipline delivers corrosion research and advice to our Defence partners and stakeholders on; corrosion mechanisms and corrosion mitigation strategies affecting materials in the immersed environment, the development of predictive computational models of cathodic protection systems and corrosion-related electromagnetic signatures, applied research directed at current and future fleet that supports investigations of immersed corrosion issues. The team is strongly engaged with Maritime based Systems Program Offices, industry supporting maritime asset sustainment, and collaborates with academia and international Defence Organisations on procurement and sustainment. The Team is strongly aligned with the Group motto, “From the laboratory to the battlefield” and is focused supporting Defence sustainment to provide impact to the RAN.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a subject matter expert in immersed corrosion and corrosion mechanisms for materials, coatings and systems used in maritime ships and structures, with the ability to understand and define corrosion related problems, formulate the most appropriate research approach, conduct analysis of complex systems, and interpret results for Defence stakeholders.

You can work effectively across organisational boundaries and you are passionate about creating opportunities for staff to develop professionally. You can articulate a compelling S&T vision for your team and senior management and follow this to lead your team in development of solutions to immersed corrosion in its many forms for the maritime domain. You will partner effectively with industry and academia to deliver a capability edge to the ADF through your ability to build diverse teams, develop S&T work packages and respond to strategic drivers in Defence.
