The Role
The Program Leader – High Performance Computing provides strategic leadership in the application and development of computational and data intensive capability (including infrastructure, systems, tools, competencies, and processes) through the secure High Performance Computing Infrastructure. They will work closely with various areas within DSTG’s Digital Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) function to deliver and operate Defence computational and data intensive infrastructure, systems and tools, and evolve DSSC’s operating model (including ways of working, competencies and culture) to enable new computational and data intensive capabilities. The role engages with researchers, senior leaders, external research partners and national and international organisations with regard to computational and data intensive capabilities. It promotes, educates, and informs new ways to exploit computational and data intensive capabilities through the use of the HPC to accelerate and increase the impact of Defence research.

The Program Leader – High Performance Computing is accountable, through Chief Research Services Division, to the Capability Manager Innovation Science and Technology for the provision of large scale, secure, sovereign computational and data science capabilities for Defence. The roles requires a highly motivated technology leader with a passion for delivering innovative and valued outcomes to a diverse research community.

The role will provide the vision, guidance and direction to harness the ability of the HPC Program to provide world class computational and data science capabilities to Defence researchers to enable them to enhance Australian Defence Force (ADF) and deliver well qualified advice to Defence. The position will inspire a team of professionals to push the frontiers of computational and data science to create new scientific insights. The ideal candidate will leverage their HPC experience, awareness and knowledge of computational and data science, to provide expert, impartial and timely advice which will impact current and future ADF capabilities. The role will be required to engage clients to develop an understanding of their priorities and work with them to select and optimise the best scientific methods and solutions to meet their needs. You will be a trusted influential source of evidence-based analysis which shapes and enhances Defence and national security decision making.

The role will be accountable for leading and managing:

  • The delivery of a world class, secure Defence High Performance Computing capability including the planning, acquisition, deployment and development of the next generation of infrastructure and optimised software in support of leading-edge computational and data intensive infrastructure and capability.
  • The workforce, systems management and applied science support groups for Defence High Performance Computing including the development of practices, skills and culture delivering computational and data science capabilities to Defence, in collaboration with Program Leader Digital Science and Program Leader Scientific Computing.
  • The achievement of the High Performance Computing technical refresh acquisition and sustainment programmed in the Defence Integrated Investment Program including the timely provision of capability and financial reporting to Defence.
  • The adoption of best practice in the uptake, utilisation, deployment and development of High Performance Computing in support of computational and data science in Defence, working closely with relevant DSTG researchers and DSSC capability areas.
  • Engagement with the DSTG Senior Leadership Team, Defence and National Security partners, researchers and external science & technology partners on the opportunities for use of advanced computational and data science and emerging computational technologies including, for example, in support of Defence’s STaR Shots and Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI), and direct interest to the appropriate work take on area.
  • Engagement with strategic HPC partners and relevant Australian and international agencies to ensure DSTG effectively leverages developments in computational capability and technology, including representing Defence and DSTG in national and international forums and collaboration programs.

About our Team
The Defence High Performance Computing Program (HPC Program) maintains a world class computational ecosystem that is designed to provide supercomputing (also known as High Performance Computing (HPC) in support of modern data analytics and drive superior decision-making through advanced modelling and simulation. We draw upon our diverse backgrounds, skills, experience and knowledge to provide a capability edge to Defence across the strategic, operational and tactical levels.

The HPC Program provides the Department of Defence HPC capabilities and computational science expertise that enables Defence scientists and engineers to conduct a wide-range of research and development, test and evaluation and acquisition engineering activities. This partnership sends advanced technology to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) faster, more efficiently and with a greater certainty of success. Today, the HPC Program provides a complete advanced computing environment for Defence that includes unique expertise in software optimisation, secure system design and powerful high-performance computing systems. The HPC Program is managed on behalf of the Department of Defence by the Defence Science and Technology Group.
