ASD is the Australian Government’s foreign signals intelligence, offensive cyber, and cyber security agency.

We are seeking dynamic Senior Executives to drive the organisation forward and deliver against our three principal functions:

  • collect foreign signals intelligence;
  • enhance Australia’s cyber resilience; and
  • conduct offensive cyber operations.

In all cases, our primary mission is to advance Australia’s national interests and defend Australia from global threats. From the threat of terrorism through to protecting and supporting Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel when they are deployed overseas, ASD plays a key role in Australia’s national security.

To achieve these objectives, ASD requires people with high levels of integrity and a mix of specialist skills, key among which are adaptability, imagination, and resilience. These are needed to out-think and out-imagine our adversaries and solve seemingly intractable technical and operational challenges. We are seeking to fill a broad range of positions at the Senior Executive Service (SES) Band 1 level, including, but not limited to, the following:

Cyber and ICT roles

 The Assistant Director-General Technical Threats and Visibility is responsible for several cyber threat operational teams within the Australian Cyber Security Centre, including malware analysis, threat hunting and active vulnerability assessments. These teams provide an integral technological function in ASD, with a highly technical workforce, and a plethora of cyber specialists. The enablement of these functions are essential in the delivery of cyber security and organisational outcomes, which assist in generating the national threat picture for the ACSC and broader ASD. You will also responsible for the leadership of multiple initiatives, including the Cyber Visibility Centre. You will be expected to maintain a strong compliance culture and contribute productively to ASD as a senior decision maker, while delivering directives from relevant strategic drivers and national cyber security capabilities.

 The Assistant Director-General Cyber Uplift is responsible for the delivery of cyber security uplift services, including technical advice, products, assessments, and evaluations for both Information Technology and Operational Technology environments, to both critical infrastructure and government stakeholders. You will be responsible for Critical Infrastructure and Operational Technology Environments, Government Uplift and Governance, Risks and Architecture.

 The Assistant Director-General Standards, Technical Advice and Research is responsible for the delivery of technical cyber security advice spanning enterprise, operational, critical and emerging technologies and supply chain. This includes critical, emerging & operational technology research, development and collaboration, responsibility for the IRAP, collaboration on national and international standards, publication of technical advice and guideline, reviewing ASD equities in foreign investment and TSSR processes.

Data, Technology and Capability roles

 The Assistant Director-General Data Analytics & Management is responsible for delivering quality-assured, high value data products to meet analytic objectives in support of ASD’s missions. You will lead ASD’s implementation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and will be responsible for establishing and developing an Aritificial Intelligence Hub outside of Canberra, including the people and tools required to develop, test, train and deploy AI models into existing analytic platforms. The ADGDAM role is responsible for; Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Data Management and Governance and Supporting the mission through Analytic Data Solutions

 The Assistant Director-General Data Technology is responsible for delivering and sustaining the core data technology platforms to meet ASD mission data needs. You will lead the re-architecture of ASD’s data infrastructure to ensure it is resilient, redundant and sufficiently flexible to adapt quickly to new capability requirements. You will also be responsible for leading Mission Data Division’s transformation to the use of cloud technologies for future capabilities. You will be responsible for the following areas; Data Platforms, Data Distribution Technologies, Data Processing on Cloud Technologies. To support the required growth of Mission Data Division’s workforce, ADGDT is also responsible for leading a range of recruitment and retention initiatives.

• Assistant Director-General (Various) - ASD has a significant portfolio of large scale mission critical capabilities across a multidisciplinary, diverse and inclusive workforce. As an ADG, you will lead a multidisciplinary, multi-site branch delivering strategic and operational outcomes. ASD is delivering a significant new program of work and your leadership will be key to ensuring ASD maintains existing missions whilst also delivering new outcomes for the organisation. You will manage significant staff and budget resources, leverage strategic industry relationships and co-operatively engage with customers and stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to enhance current practices in pursuit of greater efficiencies, driving transformation and continuous improvement.

As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of ASD as the Australian Government’s foreign signals intelligence, offensive cyber, and cyber security agency.

As a Branch Head (SES Band 1) you will join ASD’s Senior Leadership Group and play a key role in leading and influencing a high-performing integrated civilian/military organisation. You will influence the strategic direction of ASD and work with colleagues across the Defence portfolio and Government to achieve results. In these roles you will:

  • lead and manage a Branch using inclusive leadership, including leading change and transformation initiaives in support of ASD’s objectives;
  • exercise high-level judgement, and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems;
  • think laterally, effectively challenge the status quo and provide contestability in decision making; and
  • demonstrate resilience and take personal accountability for achieving results.
