The Role
DSTG is seeking an experienced and highly motivated human sciences team leader capable of supporting and evolving the work of high performing human scientists to support Royal Australian Navy (RAN) undersea warfighting systems.

The position is located at DSTG-Stirling on Garden Island in Western Australia where you will lead our Human Systems discipline within the Human Systems and Information Integration team.

Your role will be to work closely with the Group Leader to plan and manage the work program of the Human Systems team. You will need to energise their efforts to continue to conduct world class Defence research and to help to successfully shape their careers.

You will work in the context of undersea Defence. So your work will involve understanding how submarines, sensors and other equipment operate and the role that people play in the complex, extreme undersea defence environment. Based on that knowledge you will plan and manage research in a collaborative setting to address questions about the design of future technologies, future human work systems (the two are interrelated) and physical arrangements of work environments.

You will also be encouraged to pursue your own line of research with broad application to Defence and to grow both your research skills and networks.

The Human Systems team is quite lean and the problem space for RAN is very large so it will be important for you to leverage established partnerships and develop new partnerships across Australia and internationally to produce outcomes for Defence.

You will need to work closely with universities, industry and international partners to provide advice to RAN clients and projects. There may be opportunities for travel, conferences and broad networking with scientists across Australia.

The Human Systems and Information Integration team conduct research that support human performance on board submarines (physical, cognitive and team) as well as decision support concepts, and information processing algorithm development that we hope will give our submarines a decision making advantage.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a motivated and motivating team leader able to create and leverage partnerships to achieve outcomes. You will be able to manage a high performing team in applied human sciences research and practice, and be experienced in providing specialised technical advice to guide research agreements in achieving a high level of scientific rigour in human systems programs. You can demonstrate excellent communication skills including liaison with clients and key stakeholders, as well as report writing and information sharing.

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have an understanding of:

• Experimental psychology or human in the loop simulation studies.
• Physical ergonomics and crewing endurance in the undersea context.
• The advantages and disadvantages of automation and autonomy in command and control contexts.
• The human sciences role in acquisition programs.
