The Role
Operational sonar systems depend on complex interactions between the environment, sensors, processing systems, combat management systems, displays and operators. You will lead, supervise and mentor a team focused on maturing research to capability through a holistic treatment of sonar systems, including aspects such as mission planning, sensing, signal processing, command and control, and acoustic displays. You will work closely with Navy and Air Force to provide support to their in-service and in-acquisition sonar systems and identify gaps. You will foster collaborations with other teams, internal and external to DSTG, to investigate and prototype potential evolutions to existing and future sonar systems, and partner with industry and international organisations to explore transition paths for these developments. You will work with other leaders in Maritime Division to shape the future directions of the Remote Undersea Surveillance STaR Shot.
The Team
The Sonar Technology and Systems branch of Maritime Division works closely with the ADF to provide support to in-service and future sonar systems and conducts world leading research and development of undersea sensors, sonar system processing and displays, and capability analysis for Anti-submarine Warfare in the challenging ocean environment. As part of the Undersea Sensing Systems and Experimentation group, you will work with a team of motivated engineers, scientists and technicians to provide advice, performance analysis and enhanced sonar sensing capability for in-service and future ADF sonar systems. The team has strong knowledge and experience of in-service sonar systems, providing advice and analysis from wet end to dry end, and is able to investigate and prototype novel processing, classification, planning and display techniques and systems, including conducting experimentation to test concepts at-sea.
Our Ideal Candidate
We seek a person who is passionate about science and technology relating to the processing and analysis for military sonar systems and off-board platforms, and is motivated to lead a small team developing processing and display techniques to improve the performance of undersea sensors and systems. You will understand the importance of effective supervision and mentoring for staff, and be able to balance priorities between client needs and underpinning research. You will also have a high level of initiative and aptitude for working in a multidisciplinary environment, and be able to develop and sustain external linkages with industry, academia, and international organisations.
