Defence seeks experienced and innovative executives to provide leadership and vision to advise and partner with Groups and Services, within Defence, to deliver responsible financial stewardship in accordance with legislation and Commonwealth and Defence policies.

Assistant Secretary, Financial Compliance

As part of the Defence Senior Leadership team, the Assistant Secretary Financial Compliance vacancy presents a unique and exciting opportunity for the right person to play a key role in managing the Defence’s financial reporting obligations and helping all Defence personnel to understand and meet their financial obligations.

Defence has over $110 Billion in assets and incurs expenditure in excess of $40 Billion across the year. This role has responsibility for the establishment of financial and asset accounting policies and a control framework to support the complete and accurate reporting of all financial transactions. Meeting monthly and annual reporting obligations, managing the relationship with ANAO and coordinating activity to support the annual financial statement audit are key deliverables.

Defence has over 60,000 ADF members and 16,000 APS members. This role is responsible for the development of finance and travel policies that are designed to ensure that all Defence personnel understand and meet their financial obligations. This extends to establishment of compliance and assurance frameworks designed to detect and correct non-compliance. A key focus of the role is on the development and provision of learning solutions to improve understanding and compliance and to enhance financial literacy across managers and decision makers within Defence.

The position also manages the tax compliance and lodgement obligations.

Mandatory tertiary qualifications (CA or CPA) and extensive experience in financial management and proven leadership ability of a high order are required.

Assistant Secretary, Finance - Air Force

The Assistant Secretary, Air Force Finance Branch, is an important role in promoting and influencing the organisation and its people. As part of the Defence Senior Leadership team, the Assistant Secretary Finance, Air Force vacancy presents a leader who is inclusive and collaborative to play a key role in supporting Air Force deliver capability through providing high level strategic financial advice and support.  This will include responsibility for financial aspects of major capital projects and capability sustainment programs.

Air Force provides air power capabilities to the Australian Defence Force’s capacity to defend Australia, contribute to regional security, support Australia’s global interests, shape the strategic environment and protect national interests.

In this role, you will manage a team geographically disbursed across the country, who are embedded within key delivery organisations across Defence supporting Air Force outcomes.

This senior role is pivotal as you will be partnering with multiple business areas and stakeholders and will see the direct impact of the work you deliver and how it affects broader operational outcomes. Each operational area you support helps you to build a deeper understanding of Defence’s mission, as you build your career.

Candidates who are experienced, capable and qualified financial management professionals with extensive experience undertaking financial activities and advice will have a distinct advantage.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence Senior Executive Service Band 1 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo security assessments to the appropriate level.

A merit pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill similar vacancies that may occur within the next twelve months.
