The Role

You will lead, supervise, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team who conduct research and provide specialist advice to Defence on maritime robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) communications technologies (including uninhabited surfaced and underwater vehicles), with emphasis on exploiting knowledge of the undersea environment, communications protocols and standards, and systems to optimise command and control, and data transfer between multiple maritime RAS. This includes developing techniques to predict, measure, and characterise the performance of RAS communication systems.

You will collaborate with other DSTG teams to apply knowledge of maritime RAS communications to a range of studies, decision-support capabilities, and development of concept demonstrators.  You will engage with key Defence stakeholders and initiate research programs with national scientific and international partners concerned with the development of RAS communication systems for military effect.

About our Team

The Littoral Systems Autonomy team leads efforts to undertake research activities in a complex area of S&T relevant to maritime autonomy science and technology including robotic and autonomous system (RAS) decision sciences, systems integration and communications protocols, standards and systems. The team undertake and support modelling and simulation activities, together with extensive open water field trials to support the understanding and development of technology maturation in these areas.

The team is part of the Littoral Autonomy Sensors and Systems major science capability whose mission is to support the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) RAS-AI (Robotic and Autonomous Systems – Artificial Intelligence) strategy and acquisition projects – to deliver a future force with a capability edge.

Our Ideal Candidate

We seek a person who is passionate about science and technology relating to maritime RAS communications, and is motivated to lead a small team developing techniques to develop advanced communications capability to support command and control, and data transfer between multiple RAS systems.  You will understand the importance of effective supervision and mentoring for staff, and be able to balance priorities between client needs and underpinning research.  You will also have a high level of initiative and aptitude for working in a multidisciplinary environment, and be able to develop and sustain external linkages with industry, academia, and international organisations.
