Senior Executive Band 1 - Several 

Defence is seeking dynamic senior executives, to drive the organisation forward and deliver on Defence’s mission – to defend Australia and its national interests.

We are seeking to fill a number of positions at the SES Band 1 level that could include the following types of roles:

  • Strategic, international and Defence industry policy – providing policy, military strategy and strategic planning to the Australian Government and senior Defence leaders. Roles include engagement with Defence Industry to explore how Defence capability benefits through the contribution of Australian and international Defence industry policy. Providing policy, military strategy and strategic planning to the Australian Government and senior Defence leaders.
  • Defence and geospatial intelligence – conducting analysis of global events from a range of sources and providing intelligence assessments to assist the awareness and decision-making of the Australian Government and senior Defence leaders; and providing geospatial intelligence in support of an increasing range of national security interests and Defence requirements.
  • Capability acquisition and sustainment – supporting the security of Australia and its national interests by acquiring, maintaining and disposing of military equipment for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).  Roles include managing the acquisition of Defence materiel equipment and support to meet Defence operational requirements. Program management of workforce, finance and resource risks to deliver required outcomes. Advising on complex contracting and procurement matters within the public sector (State or Federal).
  • Communications – roles include development of communications strategy and plans; provide strategic communications advice; prepare officials for media engagements. Develop and administer publication and manage corporate social and digital media presence and ministerial coordination and communication.
  • Corporate functions – delivering high quality outcomes across the Department from strategy and policy development, through to implementation and service delivery.  Areas range from finance, facilities and estate security, information and communications technology, information management, human resources, audit, and security vetting services.

The candidate will be a strategic thinker with significant leadership and management ability, possess strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability as a persuasive leader. 

As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of Defence, as most recently detailed in the 2020 Defence Strategic Update. You will:

  • Lead and manage a Branch practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration
  • Demonstrate strong judgement and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems
  • Effectively challenge the status quo when required
  • Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of results
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal

As part of this selection process, a merit pool will be established and used to fill current and expected vacancies over the next 12 months.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the role, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen or intending to become one, and
  • assessed as suitable to hold and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance, or higher if required for the role.
