The Concepts and Futures (C&F) team within the Joint and Operations Analysis Division is looking for a Senior Emerging Technologies Analyst to lead the development of strategic products. These will include reports such as the Strategic S&T Outlook and Defence Megatrends, as well as being the Technology Foresight lead for the Emerging and Disruptive Technology Assessment Symposia.

Working with the C&F team and with subject matter experts from across DST, this analyst will have a leading role in supporting the Technology Foresight work program and the running of the STC. Concepts and Futures is a dedicated team of multidisciplinary researchers that conduct specific horizon scanning and technology-watch activities on identified emerging and potentially disruptive technologies in the 15 to 30-year timeframe.

The team conduct research into the methods, tools and analysis techniques for technology horizon scanning, to understand potential future contexts, and to assist in the development of operating concepts for those contexts. These methods are also made available to other areas in DST and externally to aid them in conducting their own horizon scanning or long-term technology-watch activities. The outputs from these activities are used to inform wide-ranging products such as the S&T Strategic Outlook, future operating concepts, Defence force design considerations, future strategic research investment, and prioritisation considerations for Government investment in programs such as the Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF) through EDTAS.

The position requires a demonstrated understanding of the factors affecting S&T research and development and their strategic relevance to Defence.   The ability to recognise opportunities for the long-term benefit of Defence and to use scientific judgment to analyse options and make decisions on which research areas to influence to maximise Defence outcomes are also key attributes of the position.  The position also requires the analysis of emerging technologies, and an ability to communicate the relevance of those technologies in a Defence and National Security context.
