   Principal Project Officer - Policy 

  • Temporary full-time role available for up to 4 years
  • Southern NSW location negotiable, Murray or Lower Darling area preferred
  • Total remuneration package up to $160,187 inclusive of super and annual leave loading

 We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Project Officer, Policy to manage a small team responsible for developing the strategic direction of projects within our Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism (SDLAM) Program for NSW.

As Principal Project Officer Policy, you will lead a small team in the development and implementation of evidence-based strategic policy, relating to the delivery of the NSW SDLAM projects. Your day to day responsibilities will include policy and legislation development and review in close consultation with other Department of Industry policy makers, stakeholder consultation, undertaking research and analysis to identify emerging issues and preparing briefings and correspondence to respond to requests from the Department or Minister’s Office. You will also liaise extensively with senior management within the Division and across other government agencies.

This is a challenging role in a high-pressure environment, your motivation, resilience and decisiveness will be instrumental in setting you up for success.

 Our ideal candidate

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Expertise in translating evidence into policy frameworks and positioning
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills to effectively negotiate and consult with both government and communities
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire team members
  • Experience managing a high volume of work with competing demands and working within tight timeframes
  • Sound understanding or the ability to quickly gain a working knowledge of state or federal government processes will be highly valued in this role

About us

The NSW Department of Industry leads the state government’s contribution to making NSW a place where people want to live and work and businesses choose to invest and grow. Our Water Branch exists to efficiently manage water in NSW with the objective to create a contemporary government water agency focused on planning and policy, regulation, information and insights, and programs and performance.

The SDLAM Program Team works to deliver on 23 infrastructure, rule-based and constraints management programs and projects to support sustainable water management for the Murray-Darling Basin. The water management projects focus on water saving, water supply offsets and improved flow management works across the Murray Darling and Murrumbidgee basins to effectively manage water flows.
