The Research Leader - Aerospace Systems Effectiveness reports to the Chief of Aerospace Division, and under broad guidance is responsible for leading the Aerospace Systems Effectiveness Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC), which is comprised of several component Science and Technology Capabilities (STCs), and managing the “raise, train and sustain” function for the MSTC. The Research Leader will have developed an international reputation for excellence in a specific field of S&T and have extensive experience, awareness and knowledge across a broad range of science applied to Defence.

The Research Leader will lead and inspire their staff to push the frontiers of science and technology, and work with the STC experts at a conceptual level to create new scientific insights. They will maintain awareness of developments in the field of Aerospace Systems Effectiveness, will review reports and publications prepared by staff and will be accountable for setting the standards for the quality of the S&T outputs of the Aerospace Systems Effectiveness MSTC.

The Research Leader is expected to provide research leadership to the Aerospace Systems Effectiveness MSTC by leading the development and implementation of the vision, and providing guidance, direction, coordination and collaboration necessary to ensure the capability of the MSTC can be harnessed for the delivery of agreed outputs to Defence. They will draw together and lead diverse strands of capability as teams to create opportunities for system breakthroughs. The Research Leader will be responsible for the development of the people in the Aerospace Systems Effectiveness MSTC, and will provide effective supervision of the STC Leaders and any Principal Scientists to ensure that all the staff in the MSTC contributes effectively to the output of the Aerospace Systems Effectiveness MSTC.

The Research Leader will have a sound understanding of Defence client priorities and associated requirements and will achieve outcomes which meet clients’ needs. The Research Leader will leverage relevant and complementary internal and external capabilities by establishing effective and synergistic collaborations across MSTCs, Divisions, and with external partners. They will recognise opportunities from external sources to further develop knowledge and capability for Defence, and will build and maintain strong relationships with a network of external stakeholders in industry, universities and overseas organisations.
