Research Leader, Natural Resource Economics
James Cook University (JCU) is committed to creating a brighter future for life in the tropics world-wide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference. We now have an exciting opportunity for a Research Leader to join our team on a continuing basis. This role can be undertaken from either of our picturesque tropical locations of Cairns or Townsville.
Division of Tropical Environments and Societies
The Division of Tropical Environments and Societies recognises the grand challenges facing the world today and the particular role that will be played out in the tropics. Here more than anywhere else environments and societies will see dramatic change in population growth, loss of biodiversity, and an apparent need for food production and security.
Within the Division of Tropical Environment and Societies, the Tropical Landscapes Joint Venture (TLJC) was formed in order to develop a collaborative portfolio of research drawing on the expertise of JCU and CSIRO researchers. The Joint Venture is part of the development of the Australian Tropical Forest Institute (ATFI) in Cairns and the Australian Tropical Science and Innovation Precinct (ATSIP) in Townsville and also includes CSIRO’s Atherton Laboratory. The TLJV concentrates on research to underpin the sustainable management of tropical landscapes, including the wet and dry tropics.
The TLJV has the potential to become a major provider of research to inform the development and implementation of natural resource, water and biodiversity management for North Queensland, a region that is home to two World Heritage areas.
Your role
As an accomplished professional in your field you will provide an outstanding quantitative, integrative approach to understanding the developing solutions to the complex problems facing the development of tropical landscapes in northern Australia.
With a strong mandate to resource, build and manage high performing, multi-disciplinary teams consisting of external stakeholders and experts from JCU and CSIRO, you will lead research projects that deliver ground-breaking outcomes in the development of natural resources for primary production, contribute to the economic growth and sustainability of Northern Australia and across the Topics world-wide and translate into real-world solutions.
With a history of collaborative research with others from the biophysical, primary production and/or social sciences and a strong economic focus you will harness your strong communication skills to engage with industry and other stakeholders to concentrate on creating innovative and solution-focused approaches to a range of issues such as the use of land for agriculture whilst maintaining natural resources and ecosystems and assisting industry in their future food innovation activities.
Having a strong passion and commitment for sustainable regional development, managing land use to benefit biodiversity and engaging human communities in the management of natural resources coupled with your in depth understanding of the delicate balance required between economic development and the sustainable use and management of our natural resources, you will influence Australia’s progression towards a more sustainable economy and society.
Partnering with a team of highly dedicated and passionate professionals, you will consolidate our success and further enhance our reputation as the pre-eminent provider of research to industries and communities in the world's tropics
