Senior Research Scientist - Canola Pre-breeder

The position:

As the Canola Pre-breeder Senior Research Scientist with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, you will hold responsibility for leading and building a national research program around the advancement of canola. You will operate at the intellectual interface between modern data analytical systems, physiology, agronomy and breeding.  Engaging with industry and other prospective clients, you will build CSIRO’s research portfolio in canola.  You will develop new ideas and integrate existing activities and capability into a cohesive and dynamic program that delivers real impact to the canola industry.  You will:

  • Support and develop staff to build a motivated and successful research team.
  • Lead CSIRO’s portfolio of canola research spanning pre-breeding and agronomy.
  • Address key industry issues and deliver impact to the canola industry.
  • Undertake novel research to improve the performance of canola and other grain-based farming systems.
  • Interact with investors in the public and private sphere to attract support to the program of research.
  • Ensure delivery of research outputs to the canola industry, publish in quality journals and present at national and international conferences.

Location:      Floreat (Perth) Western Australia
Salary:          AU $131k to AU $145k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as plant breeding, plant genetics or agronomy. You will also have:

  • A valid driver’s licence which permits driving on Australian roads.
  • High-level communication and negotiation skills, and an extensive record of publications in high impact, peer reviewed journals.
  • A strong track record in field based agricultural research.
  • The ability to engage industry and prospective clients interested in advancing canola.
  • The ability to develop and lead a pre-breeding/agronomy research portfolio in canola.
  • Wide-ranging experience in developing and mentoring research staff to deliver quality, high impact science.
  • The ability to work effectively as an integral member and leader of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team.
