About the opportunity 

From the appointment of Leslie Wilkinson as Australia’s first Chair in Architecture in 1918, the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality scholars in Australia. In the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the School was ranked first in Australia, and 15th in the world for Architecture/Built Environment.

We are seeking to appoint a Professor of Urbanism with an outstanding reputation for research and research leadership, and demonstrated teaching performance at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

Applicants will have an established, internationally recognised record of research, with a track record of high impact scholarly publication and competitive funding awards, with demonstrable senior research management experience. They will demonstrate commitment to engagement and research collaboration with community, practice, policy and/or industry groups, and capacity to attract and supervise outstanding postgraduate research students and postdoctoral scholars.

Your role in this position will be to:

  • build research collaborations within the school, the university and internationally, publish in high quality international outlets, and apply for research funding to develop your research area
  • attract high-quality PhD candidates
  • teach in the school’s postgraduate programs in urbanism, planning, and urban design, and in urban planning/design units taught within the school’s Bachelor of Architecture and Environments. Teaching responsibilities will include the coordination and delivery in whole or part of selected core and elective units of study.

Term and remuneration

The appointment is continuing and may be filled either full-time or part-time, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. Base salary of $197K p.a. plus superannuation.
