Michael Crouch Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health

Brain and Mind Centre | Sydney Medical School

The Michael Crouch Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health, in partnership with Brain and Mind Centre, will be situated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School to provide internationally recognised academic leadership, as well as clinical leadership, in the area of child, adolescent and youth mental health across the Westmead Precinct.

As Chair, your research objectives will be to:

  • increase high quality and internationally recognised basic and clinical research, health services and health policy initiatives focused on the field of child and youth mental health
  • support the generation of basic, clinical or population-based research findings that address priorities in child and youth mental health. This will be achieved by focusing on the development of specialised assessments, innovative services and/or novel treatment programs for children and youth with developmental and emerging mental health disorders
  • generate research that is transformative in nature and achieves high impact in clinical practice transformation in the specialist NSW health sector and beyond.

You will also be eligible for appointment at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead as a clinical academic with a remuneration package equivalent to 0.4 FTE Senior Staff Specialist. In that role you will also provide clinical and other services to the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) [The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick], including the clinical care of inpatients and/or outpatients. This service contribution will be covered by a separate contract with SCHN.

Your position will be substantively research-based though will contribute significantly to the Master of Brain and Mind Sciences program and other educational programs associated with Brain and Mind Centre, Sydney Medical School MD program, and the faculties of Science, Health Sciences and Nursing & Midwifery.

You will possess relevant achievements in research and clinical experience in mental health disorders in children and young people and also special needs populations, and be experienced in the implications for emotional and brain development and the neuroscience/neurobiology of child mental health development that informs research into antecedents of psychiatric illness. Although the services of SCHN cater for those up to 16 years of age, and in some instances 18, you will have the capacity to work along the trajectory of youth mental health, from infancy and childhood through adolescence and youth, up to 25 years of age through partnerships with other organisations.

The Child and Youth Mental Health Plan currently under development with Western Sydney Local Health District will be focusing on better care coordination and early interventions across all agencies. You will be expected to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of the plan, and bring academic rigour and capacity building to its vision. Opportunities to work collaboratively across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network with initiatives arising from similar mental health research will also be available.

Term

The appointment will be made on a continuing, full-time basis, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees, and the successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
