Position Profile: We have created an exciting new position of Principal Medical Scientist in the single service discipline of Anatomical Pathology. This truly represents an excellent management opportunity for a passionate medical scientist to apply their expert professional knowledge and extensive experience in the discipline of Anatomical Pathology.

You will report to the Director Pathology (Anatomical Pathology) and partner to achieve outcomes for effective service delivery consistent with service needs and defined expectations at a State-wide level. This includes ensuring service delivery meets clinical governance requirements, including continuous improvements and risk assessment.

We are looking for a candidate who has a proven track record of advanced and successful leadership and management expertise.

You will provide innovative operational and strategic leadership of Anatomical Pathology to drive, coordinate and direct scientific staff in this challenging multidisciplinary specialised team to meet the needs of health care providers and clients. The role will enable you to demonstrate your energetic and flexible approach to provide collaborative and consultative solutions to complex service delivery issues in a high-pressured environment providing State-wide services. You will be able to use your high level communication, negotiation and influencing skills to provide expert advice to the Pathology Director, PathWest Executive team, Health Service Providers, internal and external stakeholders on emerging trends and issues, proposing strategies to improve service delivery.

As an actively engaged senior team manager, you will apply contemporary management practices to ensure effective operations and be responsible for the planning and provision of resources (including human and financial) for all the diagnostic and research laboratories across Anatomical Pathology in PathWest. You will have expert level organisational, conceptual and analytical skills combined with a solutions-focus to successfully be the Principal Scientist.

Our pathology services cover the broadest range of routine, complex and rare tests, and our active teaching, research and pathology development programs assist enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve the understanding of disease processes and of clinical care.

The PathWest Anatomical Pathology discipline provides comprehensive, State-wide diagnostic and clinical services in the fields of histopathology, cytology, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, molecular pathology, non-coronial post-mortem examination and a frozen section service.

The discipline is highly subspecialised with centres of excellence. The discipline employs 167 scientific staff and 50 Pathologists (full-time equivalents) with expertise in many subspecialties such as gynaecological pathology, lymphoma pathology, neuropathology, breast pathology, soft tissue and bone pathology.

The discipline also provides services for numerous clinical trials and consultation for expert opinions on cases referred from other pathology providers, including cases from interstate and overseas.
