We are hiring for the Head of Economic Research at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Economic Research plays a crucial role in building the RBA and the RBA Board’s understanding of the economy, the impact of monetary policy on economic outcomes and how these change over time. The Head of Research must inspire, guide, and enable a team of people to define and deliver outcomes that enhance understanding and ultimately enable better monetary policy decisions, in a way that is consistent with the RBA’s strategic priorities.

Role Objectives

  • Oversee and contribute to the effective performance of the RBA and delivery of the RBA’s strategic priorities through leadership of the Economic Research department and contributing to RBA-wide strategic initiatives.
  • Motivate, foster, and inspire a culture aligned to the RBA’s values, enabling an environment for high levels of staff engagement and performance.
  • Build an open and dynamic environment that focuses on delivering outcomes, prioritisation, learning and adapting as we go.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and development of employees and teams to effectively achieve team, department, and enterprise outcomes.
  • Provide proactive and effective communication, encouraging multilevel feedback and fostering a culture of openness and trust.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders to achieve enterprise outcomes.

Technical Capabilities

  • Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of economists and technical experts to deliver agreed-upon outputs, including leading through change.
  • Experience developing and successfully implementing strategic plans at a department/business unit level.
  • Experience anticipating and managing complex risks and engaging with multiple stakeholders to successfully deliver strategic objectives, including the effective management of staff health, safety and holistic wellbeing.
  • Experience in developing policies, systems, and processes, including substantial experience in the provision of high-level policy advice and recommendations for change.
  • Proven experience in directing and/or undertaking research and analysis in economics/finance.
  • Ability to write and communicate for different audiences, contexts, and objectives.
  • Experience credibly representing public or private sector organisations at a senior level, in formal and informal settings.
  • Strong understanding of the Australian economy, financial markets, and system.
  • Strong understanding of the purpose of the central bank, and the context in which all functional areas contribute to the strategic goals of the enterprise.

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in economics or a related discipline, preferably at postgraduate level, or equivalent experience.
