About the Role


Our next Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the Council. This will involve ensuring that all financial data provided for the purposes of decision-making is accurate and up-to-date, while adhering to all reporting and regulatory requirements as necessary.

A key part of this position will be the leadership component - you will have 2 direct reports, and will oversee a broader team of 6-8 staff members in our Finance team. You will provide direction, support and annual staff performance reviews while identifying opportunities for further development within the team.

This is a hands-on role that suits someone with a high technical capability, who is able to roll up their sleeves and work alongside their team when required.

Day to day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing risk, budget, resources and facilities
  • Participating in and contributing to planning processes and other regional initiatives coordinated by NESROC
  • Leading in the strategic planning for the section within Council identified priorities
  • Providing advice to Council and Senior Management on financial matters
  • Assisting Managers in coordinating applications for grants or subsidised funding schemes
  • Attending Council meetings as required and assisting the Manager Governance in the recording and publishing of Council Meetings Minutes when required

About You


To be considered for this position, you must hold tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (Finance or Accounting).

Critical to your success in this position will be a commitment to maintaining your knowledge with regard to regulatory compliance, and the ability to lead a team.

Other requirements include:

  • A thorough understanding of the Local Government Act and associated Financial Regulations including Accounting Standards and Local Government Code of Accounting Practice
  • The ability to think and plan strategically
  • Highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Technically and professionally competent, with a pride in keeping their knowledge current
  • A focus on solutions, with the ability to collaborate with the team as opposed to just managing them
