A former Queensland Department of Transport boss has taken over the top job at the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

Sal Petroccitto is the new CEO for the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

He replaces Richard Hancock, who resigned in March due to family reasons.

Mr Petroccitto has been with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads in recent years. He represents the Queensland Government on the NHVR Project Implementation board and also sits on the board of Transport Certification Australia.

He was behind the development of several strategic policies for the QLD’s transport system while also maintaining overall control of the state’s multi-modal freight policy agenda.

The long-time public servant spent three and a half years with software firm InfoMaster, and his IT experience was reportedly a key driver in his selection for the new role.

Petroccitto has recently worked to deliver an improved and effective transport system, boosting supply chain outcomes.

He has managed projects in construction, urban and regional planning, and brings an extensive knowledge of various stages of heavy vehicle regulation.

Mr Petroccito will start in his new role on May 19.
