Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) has appointed a new general manager to head the company’s mining and metals business, following the appointment of the former general manager, Santo Rizzuto, to the role of CEO.

Phil Lory, formerly SKM’s Area Manager, Asia Pacific, will now lead SKM’s mining activities across the company’s global operations.

Santo Rizzuto said that the appointment had been made at an exciting and challenging time when the company is focused on delivering projects for clients across Australia, South America and Africa, while expanding into new regions.

“We anticipate an even busier time ahead and believe that Phil’s extensive experience across SKM’s business and in the mining, power and heavy industry sectors, will enable us to capitalise on the myriad opportunities ahead to grow our business,” Rizzuto said.

Lory’s extensive experience includes a broad operational understanding of SKM’s business across Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He also has previous general manager experience, having been General Manager of SKM’s Heavy Industry Business Unit (combining Mining, Power and Industry) until 2003.

“It is important to acknowledge Phil’s significant contribution to SKM as Area Manager - Asia Pacific over the past five years,” Rizzuto said.

“During this period the Asia Pacific region has delivered strong performance and established a robust platform from which to implement strategies to extend our activities in the growing economies of the broader Asian region. Phil has been involved in projects in countries including Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, USA, Kenya and New Zealand”.

Lory said that he was looking forward to the challenge of expanding SKM’s service delivery to mining clients, wherever their projects are located.

“In my previous role as Area Manager, Asia Pacific, I was able to gain valuable insights into the Asian market in particular and will continue to build our capabilities in China and elsewhere, to better service our clients’ projects,” Lory said.

“We are starting to work with clients on their projects in countries such as Guinea, Liberia and Ghana in Africa and also in Peru, Colombia and Brazil, in South America, and we hope to further build our capacity to deliver in these regions over time.”
