The Australian Human Rights Commission will appoint a new President, following the decision by Catherine Branson to step down 15 months before the expiry of her five-year term.

Ms Branson, formerly a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, is understood  to have made the decision to leave the Sydney-based position to enable her to spend more time with her family in Adelaide.

The President of the Commission has responsibility for the management of inquiries and conciliation of complaints alleging unlawful discrimination and breaches of human rights.
