Thousands of items from the closed Port Augusta power stations in South Australia will be auctioned off in coming weeks.

In a sale that is expected to attract interest from across Australia, Alinta Energy has instructed auctioneers to sell off all sorts of machinery and other items from the power stations.

The final station in the Port Augusta - the Northern Power Station - was last to be disconnected from the network earlier this month.

The first items up for sale will be the contents of the neighbouring Playford A and B stations when are put on the block over two days in June.

Auctioneers are estimating about 2,000 lot items will be sold over the two-day auction, including spare parts, four-to-five-tonne electric motors, lathes, mechanical engineering presses, work benches and much more.

A specialist firm will be brought in to oversee auctions of major items like the actual power-generating systems, which weigh over 1,000 tonnes.

The stations will be demolished after the auctions, in a project set to include the explosive deconstruction of the Northern Power Station chimney.

An 80-person demolition team is being lined up.
