A Norwegian high-roller has lost his attempt to sue an Australian online betting agency.

Bjarte Baasland had sought to sue Centrebet and others for damages, accusing multiple international agencies of allowing him to burn through over $15 million across several sites.

Despite the company being in the Northern Territory, the Supreme Court of Norway ruled it had jurisdiction to hear the matter because gambling on Centrebet was available in Norweigan currency. Centrebet is registered in the Northern Territory and was acquired by Sportingbet Australia in 2011. In its defense the lawyers for Centrebet argued that Territory laws should be applied, and was successful.

Ms Baasland accused the company of negligence in allowing him to spend his millions, but Justice Graham Hiley ruled Centrebet did not owe the failed gambling-man anything, because Australian law prevailed.

Mr Baasland will now pay Centrebet’s court costs.
