Logan City Council is being sacked after eight councillors were charged by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe says he had “no other choice” but to sack the council.

“Immediate action must be taken to ensure the ratepayers of Logan and the residents of Logan have a council that can function,” Mr Hinchcliffe said.

“The people of Logan deserve foremost a functioning council that can continue to provide services.

“Unfortunately they find themselves in an extraordinary situation that must be addressed as quickly as possible in order to move forward in confidence.”

Mr Hinchliffe’s decision will see administrators brought in to run Logan until the next local government elections in March 2020.

Eight councillors including suspended Mayor Luke Smith have been charged with causing a dishonest detriment to the former CEO Sharon Kelsey.

They will face court on the offence - which has been likened to a type of fraud - later this month.

It is alleged that the councillors pushed CEO Sharon Kelsey out of her job after she cooperated with an investigation into corruption allegations involving members of the council.

The council was already slim, with Councillor Stacey McIntosh having been suspended in May last year over separate matters, leaving just four councillors.

Logan’s 2019-20 budget will not be able to be passed unless administrators are brought in.

Meanwhile, suspended Logan mayor Luke Smith spent the night in the Beenleigh watchhouse after an afternoon drinking session ended with him crashing into a parked car.

The owner of the damaged car called police after see Cr Smith trying to reverse his badly damaged vehicle about 4.30pm on Wednesday.

The suspended Mayor allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.139.

He has been charged with drink driving, driving without due care and attention and breaching bail conditions on pre-existing charges.
