There has been some executive musical chairs among prominent government-linked advisors this week.

David Gonski has resigned as chairperson of the Future Fund Board of Guardians, which handles the superannuation payments to retired public servants. Mr Gonski has left the post to sign-on as chair of ANZ.

It is another significant feather in Mr Gonski’s crowded cap. He also serves as chairperson of Coca-Cola Amatil, Investec Bank, and works as a director of Optus’ parent company Singapore Telecommunications.

“The bank is in a strong position and I am looking forward to working with shareholders, with my fellow directors, and with Mike Smith and his management team to continue to realise ANZ’s super regional strategy,” he said in a statement.

A temporary replacement for the Future Fund job has been found in the form of Peter Costello, the Treasurer under the Howard Government.

Mr Costello will steer the $91.7 billion fund for a few months, or “until a permanent chairman is appointed to the Future Fund Board of Guardians early in the new year,” a joint statement from Treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Matthias Cormann said.
