The Role

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic leader with science and technology experience who’s keen to take up a role leading our Digital Science Delivery Group. This exciting role is central to the delivery of leading edge digital projects to accelerate Defence research and will be critical to shaping the digital enablement of Defence’s innovation, science and technology enterprise. In this role you will drive a partnership approach with research activities to engage and deliver I,S&T capability inputs.

The Group Leader for Digital Science Delivery will lead teams to develop digital science future architectures and plans, the delivery of our portfolios of digital projects, researcher engagement and account management, the exploitation of research data and information as a capability input and as a reusable output of Defence S&T research.

Your ability to consult widely, build and maintain a network of stakeholders, and establish strong and enduring relationships with strategic partners in Defence, academia and industry will strengthen Defence’s Digital Science Delivery capability. Collaborate across the organisation to simplify access to digital resources, meet stakeholder needs, and maintain professional, science and engineering standards.

You will achieve this by working within a framework of legislation, established computational science principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives.

About our Team
Digital Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) deliver capability to accelerate Defence and National Security Science & Technology through leadership, facilitated access to digital science capabilities, eResearch techniques, and by provisioning secure digital science capabilities supported by highly advanced digital research infrastructure.

Within Digital Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC), the Digital Science Delivery (DSD) Group conducts research and innovates where Science and Technology (S&T) converges with digital research infrastructure to deliver increased research efficiencies and enable new science discovery for Defence S&T researchers.

This encompasses Defence’s High Performance Computing (HPC), computational environments such as novel cloud platforms (SRCE), laboratories and experimental solutions including deploying research infrastructure to remote locations for real-world trials and combined military exercises. DSD staff provide expert S&T advice in these areas with a strong emphasis on security which is critical to Defence, it extends to include partnering with researchers to design and deliver tailored digital research capabilities using leading edge technology to accelerate and achieve research and experimental outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who will lead the application of world leading and novel digital science tools and techniques to Defence Innovation, Science and Technology to deliver capability and strategic advantage to the Australian Defence Force and National Security.

DSD accelerates and enables research particularly where sovereign digital research infrastructure (and related systems) are required. Additionally, they ensure the complex and highly advanced program of work is well-integrated and provisioned securely, effectively and efficiently.

GL DSD provides significant leadership to computational and data science engineers and PhD qualified experts, and with a high degree of independence, is accountable for leading the DSD relationship with research programs, vendor partnerships, and provides the strategic guidance, direction and collaboration necessary to ensure digital science capability and delivery across the Defence and National Security S&T ecosystem.

GL DSD is accountable for planning and managing a significant integrated workforce (~45 APS and contractors), financial (including Defence integrated investment funding) and physical resources and drives the development of relevant STEM workforce skills, future technology processes, and succession plans.
