First Assistant Secretary Security and Vetting Services

 

The Department of Defence is seeking to fill the Senior Executive Service Band 2 position of the First Assistant Secretary Security and Vetting Services in the Defence Executive Support Group. The position is based in Canberra.

As First Assistant Secretary Security and Vetting Services you will play a critical role in providing authoritative advice to senior Defence officials, heads of other government agencies, other jurisdictions and Defence industry on protective security matters. You will be required to identify contemporary and emerging information on security issues of major departmental and government concern. The role requires understanding of the organisation’s protective security functions and capability and an understanding of the range of external factors, risks and threats. A fundamental understanding of issues, concepts, principles and practices in the area of protective security is also required. 

You will exemplify the One Defence Leadership behaviours and engender a culture of innovation, collaboration and agility. In leading three Divisions and two Intelligence agencies you will build the skills required now and into the future. You will ensure policy advice is clear, accurate and timely. At all times you will remain cognisant of the legislative and ethical frameworks in which you operate. You will be a team player committed to working across government, with industry and with international partners in pursuit of national security interests.

You will receive a competitive remuneration package inclusive of superannuation and an Executive Vehicle allowance. The salary component of your package may be negotiated. Relocation expenses will be paid where applicable.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement to this position, an applicant must be a permanent Australian citizen. This is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo security assessments to the appropriate level.
