The Department of Defence is seeking to fill a Canberra based Senior Executive Service Band 1 position within the Strategic Policy and Intelligence Group.

The Assistant Secretary South and South East Asia is responsible for policy advice on the range of Defence's international engagement in South and South East Asia.

The role is required to:

  1. Lead the work of the South and South East Asia Branch by developing staff and building a strong team to contribute to Defence Outcomes.
  2. Plan and direct the activities of the South and South East Asia Branch within the International Policy Division and manage its resources to deliver policy outcomes supporting strategic defence interests in South and South East Asia.
  3. Actively engage across Defence and other Australian Government agencies to monitor strategic developments affecting Australia's interests in South and South East Asia, and develop policy options to shape the environment and respond to emerging issues.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence SES Band 1 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for ongoing engagement, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This position is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security assessment to the appropriate level.
